Kapkirwok Eco-Restoration & Livelihood Enhancement

Turning Shifting Cultivation into Regenerative Growth

Get Involved Today

Kapkirwok village in Baringo County, Kenya, is facing escalating environmental degradation due to shifting cultivation practices. Every year, land is cleared and burned for millet farming, resulting in soil depletion, biodiversity loss, and entrenched poverty. There is a critical need for sustainable land-use alternatives that support both ecological restoration and community livelihoods.. Years of slash-and-burn practices have left hillsides bare, soils depleted, and ecosystems vulnerable. The Plus One Tree Initiative is responding with a bold, community-rooted solution.

The Kapkirwok Eco-Restoration Project is designed to phase out unsustainable shifting cultivation by offering a regenerative alternative: agroforestry and reforestation. At the heart of the effort is a model tree nursery with a goal of raising over 100,000 seedlings of native trees, fruit trees, and climate-resilient species like coffee.

These seedlings are used to reclaim degraded land, create sustainable food systems, and establish woodlots that reduce the need for destructive clearing. We work hand-in-hand with local youth and women, equipping them with practical skills in soil conservation, organic composting, and tree-based farming empowering them to become stewards of the land.

Our impact so far:

  • Transition support for over 50 farmers moving away from shifting cultivation
  • More than 32,000 seedlings propagated and distributed
  • 80 hectares under active restoration and agroforestry conversion.

By restoring the land and livelihoods together, we’re not just planting trees we’re cultivating a future free from the cycle of degradation.

Join us in turning shifting cultivation into a story of restoration.
